At least 6 people have died amid a stampede at a military recruitment gathering held in a sports arena in the West African nation.

The Wednesday's "tragic" incident appeared to have been triggered by "an unexpected surge of candidates who breached security protocols and rushed into the gates," stated a release from Ghana's armed forces.

Twenty-two additional individuals were injured, including five who remain in critical condition.

A large crowd had gathered at El-Wak stadium, in the capital, Accra, with the aspiration of joining the military.

Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of approximately thirty-two percent, the most recent government statistics show, and such enlistment drives typically attract large crowds and frequently lead to disorderly situations.
