No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
