The Kindness of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Because my travel mate was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a large multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a role with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that night. The man from Iraq came up to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the courage or self-belief to approach someone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Moreover, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
